Tham Muang On - ถ้ำเมืองออน - (Muang On Cave) is roughly 30 km due east and 40 km by road from Chiang Mai. Local legend has it that during invasions mainly by the Burmese, but also other armies, the locals would gather up their supplies and hide out in the extensive and multi layer cave system. It’s easy to see why as the entrance from down below isn’t readily apparent. Above the cave and up a fairly steep and sweaty 628 steps is the Tune Jai Buddha Chedi, worth the effort but take your time. See Visit Chiang Mai.
Ten minutes or so from Tham Muang On is the San Kamphaeng Hot Springs - น้ำพุร้อนสันกำแพง อ.แม่ออน, with several geysers feeding several streams and a swimming spot. In places the water is hot enough to cook eggs and signs are dotted around the indicating how long it takes for an egg to get to the required degree of hardness.
