Famously this wat is home to the Buddha Head statue cradled by the roots of a Banyan Tree (ficus religiosa), the same type of tree that the Buddha is reputed to have mediated under when he gained enlightenment, giving the statue added resonance.
Along with most of Ayutthaya the temple were leveled by the Burmese in their ruthless sacking in 1767, during one of the many wars between the two powers, directly leading to the fall of the Ayutthaya Kingdom and the rise of the Chakri Dynasty and the eventual move to Bangkok.
