After getting up some really strange hour to participate in the daily almsgiving to the monks, no photos allowed- and anyway I was too busy, we bused to the Ban Xieng Lom Elephant Village- about 18 km out of town. After a quick briefing we went for an elephant ride; when asked if anyone wanted to act as a mahout I said yes and then found after getting up and behind the elephant's ears that the ground seemed a long way down, but there was no way I was going to back out. So if you think I look terrified in the photos, I was!!!
Once we got to the turn around point I jumped down, my legs were aching like you wouldn't believe- something like if I had been out mustering all day. We bought some bananas which disappeared as quickly as they were handed to the elephants. After lunch we went upriver to the Tat Sae Waterfall, which was in full flow. Just before we arrived from Siem Reap there had been a massive downpour, causing the falls to put on a great show. During the dry season (November to March) the flow reduces to just a trickle and has been known to dry up completely.
